I-mode investigation on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak

Abstract: By analyzing large quantities of discharges in the unfavorable ion B ×∇B drift direction, the I-mode operation has been confirmed in EAST tokamak. During the L-mode to I-mode transition, the energy confinement has a prominent improvement by the formation of a high-temperature edge pedestal, while the particle confinement remains almost identical to that in the L-mode. Similar with the I-mode observation on other devices, the E r profiles obtained by the eight-channel Doppler backscattering system (DBS8)[1] sho… Show more

“…Moreover, the I-modes obtained at DIII-D exhibit no clear evidence of the WCM [5]. Additionally, another phenomenon appears in the I-modes in EAST, including terms such as a low-frequency oscillation (LFO) term, accompanied by weakening of the GAM [7].…”

“…Hubbard et al described joint International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) studies of the I-mode regime at the Alcator C-Mod, ASDEX Upgrade and DIII-D tokamaks over a wide range of device parameters and pedestal conditions [6]. In 2019, a typical Imode investigation in the EAST tokamak was presented for the first time [7]. After years of research, the necessary operating conditions for the I-mode are now becoming clear.…”

“…The I-mode operation regime on EAST [12] has been widely achieved in D plasma in the unfavorable B T divertor configuration (B × ∇B directed away from the active X-point), where the L-H transition threshold power is significantly higher and the energy confinement is much worse than those at the favorable configuration [13]. The access to the I-mode regime in D plasma on EAST was found to be independent from the heating method and wall material.…”

“…Besides some external means that can be adopted to actively control the turbulence, the ideal approach is to make use of some internally self-excited plasma modes that have the capability to regulate the turbulence level. Geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) and low frequency zonal flows (LFZFs) are indeed such types of modes that are commonly self-excited in L-mode plasmas on almost all tokamaks, and in I-mode plasmas on some tokamaks [1][2][3]. This is the main reason that people are interested in GAMs and LFZFs.…”
