            ‐ Sulfonatophenyl) Diphenylphosphine, Sodium Salt and its Complexes with Rhodium(I), Ruthenium(II), Iridium(I)

Ion pairs containing N-substituted derivatives of 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (pta-R; R= benzyl, butyl, hexyl) as cations and monosulfonated triphenylphosphine (mtppms) as anion were synthetized and characterized (including X-ray diffraction, too). These ion pairs act as bidentate phosphorus ligands in reactions with [(η 6 -C 10 H 14 )RuCl 2 ] 2 , yielding mononuclear or dinuclear half sandwich Ru(II) complexes. A bisphosphine 3 of good watersolubility was synthesized in reaction of pta with 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)benzene and used for the synthesis of the water-soluble dinuclear complex [{(η 6 -C 10 H 14 )RuCl 2 } 2 (μ-3)]Cl 2 .

Understanding the mechanism of toxicity of nanomaterials remains a challenge with respect to both mechanisms involved and product regulation. Here we show toxicity of ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Depending on the ligand chemistry, 1.4-nm-diameter AuNPs failed electrophysiology-based safety testing using human embryonic kidney cell line 293 cells expressing human ether-á-go-go-Related gene ( hERG ), a Food and Drug Administration-established drug safety test. In patch-clamp experiments, phosphine-stabilized AuNPs irreversibly blocked hERG channels, whereas thiol-stabilized AuNPs of similar size had no effect in vitro, and neither particle blocked the channel in vivo. We conclude that safety regulations may need to be reevaluated and adapted to reflect the fact that the binding modality of surface functional groups becomes a relevant parameter for the design of nanoscale bioactive compounds.

New air-stable, water-soluble Ru(II)-phosphane complexes were synthesized in high purity by the reaction of cis-[RuCl2(dmso)4] with 2 equivalents of 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (pta) and its N-methyl and N-benzyl derivatives (pta-Me and pta-Bn, respectively).
