meta‐Phosphonobenzoic Acid: A Rigid Heterobifunctional Precursor for the Design of Hybrid Materials

Abstract: Rigid meta-phosphonobenzoic acid 2 possesses two functional groups (phosphonic acid and carboxylic acid) both having the aptitude to associate with a metallic precursor to form hybrid materials. The hydrothermal reactions of compound 2 with MnCl 2 ·4H 2 O or Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O produce, respectively, the isostructural layered materials M(H 2 O)-(PO 3 C 6 H 4 CO 2 H) (3, M = Mn; 4, M = Co) characterized by the presence of the free carboxylic acid groups in the interlayer space (space group P2 1 /n). The reactio… Show more

“…Recently we reported the first example of an efficient bactericidal silver-based hybrid in which phosphonic and carboxylate functional groups tether the organic part with the silver salt in a 3D arrangement. 32 This work was carried out within a context that aimed to study that aimed to examine the use of rigid phosphonic acid derivatives 33 , 34 as building blocks for the construction of crystalline hybrids under hydrothermal conditions to produce fluorescent, 35 thermally stable 36 and non-centrosymmetic materials. 37,38 For Through the study of the construction synthesis of silver-based hybrids we produced materials were produced with which couldthe potentially of acting as a reservoir of silver ions i.e.…”

“…3-Phosphonobenzoic acid (I) [21] or 4-phosphonobenzoic acid (II) (Scheme 1) have been synthesised in a two-step process by using a nickel-assisted Arbuzov reaction and starting from methyl 3-bromobenzoate or methyl 4-bromobenzoate. These syntheses were carried out on several grams scale which enabled us to obtain sufficient material for the hydrothermal syntheses of 1-4.…”

“…[21] Elemental analyses were recorded with an automatic apparatus CHNS-O ThermoQuest. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) were recorded at the rate of 2°C/min from room temperature to 700°C in air or nitrogen by using a SETARAM TGA 92 apparatus.…”

“…7. The cohesion of the structure is mainly due to the existence of hydrogen bonding between two phosphonates and two carboxylic acid groups facing one to each other [34]. When this molecule is engaged in hydrothermal synthesis in presence of metal ions, different materials are obtained depending on the pH of the media and the nature of the metal ion.…”
