Megapanorpa, a new genus with a single anal horn in males from Oriental China (Mecoptera: Panorpidae)

Abstract: A new genus of Panorpidae, Megapanorpa gen. nov., is erected for five new species, Megapanorpa grandis sp. nov. (type species), M. absens sp. nov., M. gaokaii sp. nov., M. jiangorum sp. nov. and M. wanghongjiani sp. nov. This genus is similar to Cerapanorpa Gao et al., 2016 in a single anal horn on the sixth tergum of male, but can be differentiated from the latter by the following characters: the seventh abdominal segment of male is constricted and stalk‐like at base, the subgenital plate of female with a pai… Show more

“…Scorpionflies in the family Panorpidae are mostly cool habitat‐adapting insects and often inhabit high‐elevated mountainous regions in the Oriental region (Byers, 2009; Wang, Gao, & Hua, 2019; Wang & Hua, 2017, 2019). Correspondingly, their speciation and distribution were significantly affected by the climatic changes during the evolutionary history (Byers, 1988; Hu, Hua, Hebert, & Hua, 2018; Wang & Hua, 2018).…”

“…Panorpidae is the largest family in the order Mecoptera (Bicha 2018; Lin et al 2019), with ca. 500 extant species in eight genera known hitherto (Wang and Hua 2017, 2019; Gao and Hua 2019; Hu et al 2019). They are commonly called “scorpionflies” due to their enlarged and upcurving male genitalia, which superficially resemble the stinger of scorpions (Dunford and Somma 2008; Byers 2009).…”

“…Panorpidae is the most species-rich family in Mecoptera, and comprises approximately 500 species distributed mainly in the Northern Hemisphere [13][14][15][16]. The species of Panorpidae are currently assigned to eight genera [13,17,18]. The genus Panorpa Linnaeus, 1758 (ca.…”
