Listeria MonocytogenesSepticemia in a Thoroughbred Foal

Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes septicemia was diagnosed in a 6-day-old Thoroughbred foal. Primary clinical signs included fever, depression, diarrhea, and respiratory distress. Hematologic abnormalities included leukopenia, neutropenia, degenerative left shift, and hyperfibrinogenemia. Clinical chemistry and blood gas abnormalities included metabolic acidosis, hypoxemia, hypocapnia, hypoglycemia, and hyponatremia. Despite aggressive therapeutic intervention and intensive care, the foal died within 12 hours of admissio… Show more

“…Confirmation of REL has been based on the combination of these characteristic histopathological findings associated with immuno-histochemistry (Wilkins et al , 2000; Schwab et al , 2004; Ribeiro et al , 2006; Rissi et al , 2006), bacterial isolation (Yousif et al , 1984; McLaughlin et al , 1993; Johnson et al , 1995), serology (Börkü et al , 2006), and molecular biology (Wiedmann et al , 1997; Evans et al , 2004; Langohr et al , 2006; Bundrant et al , 2011). …”

“…Listeria monocytogenes rarely causes disease in horses (Emerson and Jarvis 1968;McCain and Robinson 1976;Clark et al 1978;Welsh 1983;Wallace and Hathcock 1995;Larochelle et al 1999;Wilkins et al 2000). It is described as a cause of abortion, septicaemia in equine neonates, mature horses and ponies and neurological disease in a foal (Emerson and Jarvis 1968;McCain and Robinson 1976;Clark et al 1978;Welsh 1983;Wallace and Hathcock 1995;Larochelle et al 1999;Wilkins et al 2000). Most cases of listeriosis in other species arise from the ingestion of contaminated food and listeriosis is a common disease in ruminants fed on silage, causing encephalitis, abortion and septicaemia (Low and Donachie 1997).…”
