Leptospira interrogans serogroup Sejroe serovar Hardjo in aborting cows: two herd cases in Sicily (Italy)

Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of this study was to present two outbreaks of bovine abortion due to Leptospira infection in cattle herds located in the northern part of Sicily (Italy). The animals were positive for Leptospira interrogans serogroup Sejroe serovar Hardjo in a microscopic agglutination test (MAT).Material and MethodsA total of 23 Charolaise cows (farm A) and 75 Limousine bulls and Cinisara and Modicana cows (farm B) were enrolled in this study. The blood samples were collected from all subjects at the follo… Show more

“…Studies from Europe and Asia also show a high ST diversity among different genera of small mammals [ 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 ]. Serogroups detected in our study were detected worldwide in different host species, e.g., serogroup Australis in swine, goats, cats and dogs [ 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 ]; serogroup Grippotyphosa in cattle, sheep, wild boars, dogs and horses [ 16 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 ]; and serogroup Sejroe in cattle [ 84 , 85 ].…”

“…Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) OIE guidelines were followed to perform the MAT [18,27], a serological test detecting antibodies to specific serovars using live leptospiral antigens. The strains, provided by the Italian National Reference Centre for Leptospirosis, were grown in liquid Leptospira Ellinghausen-McCullogh-Johnson-Harris (EMJH) culture medium for 4-8 days at 30 For DNA extraction from kidney, the surface was flamed and 1 g of tissue withdrawn and homogenized in 9 mL of sterile physiological solution with Stomacher ® 80 Biomaster (Seward Limited, London, UK).…”
