Lactobacillus pentosus var. plantarum C29 increases the protective effect of soybean against scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice

Abstract: Biological activities of soybean saponins are dependent on their metabolism by gut microbiota, which generate absorbable bioactive metabolites. Therefore, to enhance the pharmacological effect of soybean, we fermented defatted soybean powder (SP) with Lactobacillus pentosus var. plantarum C29 and measured its protective effect against scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice using the passive avoidance, Y-maze and Morris water maze tasks. Fermentation increased soyasapogenol B, genistein and daidzein cont… Show more

“…Lactobacillus plantarum C29 increased cognitive function in aged rats and attenuated LPS‐ or scopolamine‐induced memory impairment in mice . C29‐fermented defatted soybean powder (FDS, DW2009) also inhibited gut microbiota LPS production and attenuated LPS‐ or scopolamine‐induced memory impairment in mice . Nevertheless, the memory impairment‐ameliorating mechanism of FDS against AD remains elusive.…”

“…Based on the results from our previous animal study that showed cognitive enhancement effects of DW2009 and considering the acceptable daily intake of Lactobacillus genus for humans without appreciable adverse effects [16], the dose of 800 mg/day was selected. DW2009 is a mixture of fermented soybean powder and Lactobacillus plantarum C29 freeze-dried powder.…”

“…Similarly, fermented soybean powder with Lactobacillus pentosus var. plantarum C29 showed a protective effect against scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice (31). Scopolamine-induced reduction of hippocampal BDNF expression was reversed, and AChE activity was inhibited after treatment with fermented soybean powder extract (31).…”

“…plantarum C29 showed a protective effect against scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice (31). Scopolamine-induced reduction of hippocampal BDNF expression was reversed, and AChE activity was inhibited after treatment with fermented soybean powder extract (31). A cross-sectional clinical study also reported that fermented soybean products oriented diets have a beneficial effect among this particular population.…”
