Klebsiella pneumoniae Brain Abscess in Neonates: A Report of 2 Cases

Abstract: Brain abscesses are uncommon in neonates. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a very uncommon microbial agent to cause brain abscess. We report 2 infants with Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis who developed brain abscesses. One infant was a premature neonate who required mechanical ventilation for respiratory distress syndrome and subsequently developed nosocomial sepsis and brain abscess without evidence of preceding meningitis. Another infant was a full-term neonate without risk factors for sepsis who developed seizures on … Show more

“…On follow-up, facial palsy improved and MRI repeated at 3 months of age showed resolution of abscesses. Brain abscess in a neonate with facial palsy has not been described previously 13. In our case, the likely aetiological agent is K pneumonia , even though CSF was sterile.…”

“…K. pneumoniae constitutes a part of the pneumonia-causing microorganisms worldwide [31]. K. oxytoca causes meningitis, severe neurological complications such as hydrocephaly, empyema, and brain abscesses [32]. The results in Table (3) revealed that E. aerogenes was confirmed by MALDI-TOF MS technique in 1 (100%) and 1 (33.3%) isolates out 1 and 3 of biochemically identified E. aerogenes isolates from raw milk and kariesh cheese, respectively.…”
