Interleukin‐10 gene polymorphism rs1800896 is associated with post‐bronchiolitis asthma at 11–13 years of age

Abstract: Aim: Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that is involved with bronchiolitis and asthma. We evaluated associations between four IL-10 polymorphisms, namely rs1800871, rs1800872, rs1800890 and rs1800896, and post-bronchiolitis asthma in young adolescents. Methods:The cohort consisted of 125 children hospitalised for bronchiolitis at Tampere University Hospital, Finland, in 2000-2004, at less than six months of age. At 11-13 years, asthma diagnoses and asthma-presumptive symptoms, allergic rh… Show more

“…We found preliminary evidence that carriers of the wild‐type alleles of the IL‐10 rs1800896 and rs1800890 may have higher FEV1/FVC than non‐carriers at 11‐13 years of age. This finding is opposite to our expectations, since the wild‐type allele A in the IL‐10 rs1800896 increased the risk of school‐age asthma in this cohort . In previous studies, the wild genotypes of the IL‐10 polymorphisms rs1800896 and rs1800890 were associated with low IL‐10 production, meaning less anti‐inflammatory influence .…”

“…Of them, 138 attended the study visit at 11‐13 years of age, and current asthma was present in 18 (13.0%), regular use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) during the last 12 months in 14 (10.1%), and asthma persisting from 5‐7 years of age in 11 (8.0%) cases . The variant genotype AG or GG of the IL‐10 rs1800896 was associated with less asthma persisting from 5‐7 to 11‐13 years (4.3% vs 15.2%) and less ICS use during last 12 months (5.4% vs 18.2 %) than the wild genotype …”

“…The IL10 gene codes for the IL-10 protein, this gene is highly polymorphic [18], and many SNPs in this gene have been associated with allergic disease [19], wheezing in children [20], and childhood asthma phenotypes [21]. There is a metanalysis whose main objective was the association of SNPs of IL10 with asthma, among which the analyzed polymorphisms rs1800872 (-592C/A) was included; Xue-yan Zheng showed the association of SNP with genotypes AC or AA to risk in Asian population and atopic asthma, but did not find this in Caucasians [22].…”
