Insulodrilus martensi, a new species of Phreodrilidae (Oligochaeta) from Lake Tanganyika (East-Africa)

Abstract: Insulodrilus martensi sp. n. is the third species of the genus Insulodrilus reported from Lake Tanganyika (East Africa). A description of the new species is given below and a comparison with its congeners occurring in the same lake is made. From this comparison, the placement of Insulodrilus tanganyikae (Brinkhurst 1970) to the genus Insulodrilus is queried. The creation of a new genus might resolve its ambiguous position, straddling the genera Astacopsidrilus and Insulodrilus.Insulodrilus martensi, une nouvel… Show more

“…Other species lacking modified somatic chaetae are l. lacustris s. str. (see Remarks), l. martel1si Martin and Giani 1995 (from Africa, with alveolate penes, thickened septa in the genital region and short stiff hairs), l. gel1italisetifera Martin and Brinkhurst 1994 (also from Africa, with genital chaetae in XI and XIII and an alveolate penis) and lnsulodrillls A.M. Pinder litoralis Michaelsen 1903 (from the subantarctic Campbell Island, with long slender atria, smaller spermathecal vestibulae and ventral chaetae as described for lacllstris).…”

“…In African great lakes, the Phreodrilidae were represented until recently by only one species (Insulodrilus tanganyikae Brinkhurst, 1970, in Lake Tanganyika). New species have been discovered now in Lake Tanganyika as well as in Lake Malawi (Martin & Brinkhurst, 1994;Martin & Giani, 1995b).…”

By contrast, of the 45 described species of Phreodrilidae and others awaiting description in the first author's collection, almost all appear to be restricted to inland freshwater habitats such as streams and lakes (Martin & Brinkhurst 1994, Giani et al 1995, Martin & Giani 1995, Pinder & Brinkhurst 1997.…”
