In vivo Study on the Corrosion Behavior of Magnesium Alloy Surface Treated with Micro‐arc Oxidation and Hydrothermal Deposition

Abstract: The combination of micro-arc oxidation and hydrothermal deposition can greatly improve the anti-corrosion behavior of Mg alloy, and Mg alloy coated with this composite coating is a promising biomaterial with a satisfactory degradation rate.

“…The MgO coated specimen showed coating delamination and spallation of the layer resulting in the loss of MgO coatings. Compared to the uncoated and MgO coated, the implanted Mg with composite coatings improved the degradation resistance reasonably and showed a tendency of Mg > MgO > HT2h > HT24h at 8 weeks, and MgO > HT2h > HT24h at 4 and 12 weeks [67].…”

“…The corrosion of Mg alloys with coatings is evaluated in vitro and in vivo due to the difference in corrosion performances to the effect of cells and proteins in the biological environment. The Mg rods were coated with MgO by PEO and later hydrothermally coated for 2 h and 24 h, respectively, by Bai et al [67]. The specimens are implanted into the femoral medullary cavities of male adult New Zealand rabbits for 12 weeks.…”

“…Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), also called micro-arc oxidation (MAO), a new surface treatment technology [ 10 , 11 , 12 ], is attracting more and more attention. PEO technology is mainly used on aluminum [ 13 ], magnesium [ 14 , 15 ], titanium [ 16 , 17 ], and other metals [ 18 ]. Due to its non-pollution and cleaning characteristics, more and more attention has been paid to the plasma electrolytic oxidation technology.…”
