In vivo inhibition of the rat primary antibody response to antigenic stimulation by somatostatin

Abstract: Summary Somatostatin inhibits in vitro lymphocyte prohferative responses from a variety of species including human, mouse and rat. The immunoinhibitory effects of somatostatin are thought to involve binding to specific cell surface .somatostatin receptors on immunocompetent cells. This report describes an IM vivo immunoinhibitory effect of somatostatin on the rat pophteal lymph node lymphocyte primary antibody response to sheep red blood cell (SRBC) stimulation. Infusion of somatostatin immediately following S… Show more

“…Also Davis , (1998) found that endocrine system is the main regulator of different environmental factors affecting immunity of birds , since , it help birds to successfully compete the viral challenges. This was also observed by many authors who claimed that hormones can modulate the immune system responses (Eglezos et al , 1993 andTrout andMashaly, 1995).…”

“…A nonpeptide selective sst4 receptor agonist, J-2156, exhibited efficacy in similar animal models [128,131]. Somatostatin also decreases proliferation, chemotaxis and cytokine and immunoglobulin secretion by lymphocytes, monocytes and macrophages [132][133][134][135]. The beneficial effects of the SST analogues octreotide and pasireotide in murine antigen-induced arthritis were found to be mediated via sst2 and sst1 receptors, respectively [136].The sst4-receptorselective analogue J-2156 was also reported to inhibit the CFA-induced arthritis in the rat [131].…”

“…In vivo treatment with octreotide completely abrogates IgG2 but not IgG1 or IgM secretion from granuloma cells (Blum et al, 1993). In vivo treatment of rats with somatostatin diminishes the number of antigen-specific plasma cells formed during a primary immune response, pointing to an effect on B cell activation, proliferation and/or differentiation (Eglezos et al, 1993). In vitro differentiation of human peripheral blood B lymphocytes into plasma cells is shown to be reduced by octreotide, indicating the involvement of sst 2 and/or sst 5 .…”
