In Vitro Sensitivity and Resistance of 46 Leptospira Strains Isolated from Rats in the Philippines to 14 Antimicrobial Agents

Abstract: The in vitro susceptibilities of 46 Leptospira isolates from rats to 14 antimicrobial agents were tested. All of the strains were found to be sensitive to ampicillin, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, doxycycline, erythromycin, and streptomycin. In contrast, the tested isolates showed resistance to amphotericin B, 5-fluorouracil, fosfomycin, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, neomycin, and vancomycin. These findings will help in selecting effective and ineffective antimicrobials for treatment of leptospiros… Show more

“…Although a standardized Leptospira antibiotic susceptibility guideline has not been established by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, Leptospira susceptibility studies have been developed to enhance leptospirosis treatments [26]. However, few field isolates and reference strains have been studied to generate an understanding of the variability of susceptibilities among Leptospira species and serovars.…”

“…However, the higher MIC values for tiamulin, gentamicin, neomycin and spectomycin were not expected and the veterinary usage of these antibiotics requires attention. Regardless of the susceptibility to penicillin and ampicillin that consists of a classical leptospirosis treatment, all serovar Pomona isolates appear to be resistant to fluoroquinolones, which have been indicated as an alternative empirical treatment [26].…”

“…Terms & Conditions of access and use can be found at http:// www.tandfonline.com/page/terms-and-conditions Introduction Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that has emerged as an important cause of morbidity and mortality among impoverished populations with more than half million severe cases occurring annually (Adler & Moctezuma, 2010;Bourhy et al, 2007;Ko, Goarant, & Picardeau, 2009). Leptospirosis is generally caused by the spirochete Leptospira that is pathogenic for human (Bharti et al, 2003;Chakraborty, Miyahara, Villanueva, Gloriani, & Yoshida, 2010). Severe leptospirosis associates shock, jaundice, renal failure, and thrombocytopenia.…”

“…We aimed to study the time-dependent changes in Leptospira cells induced by ampicillin (aminobenzyl penicillin), streptomycin (aminoglycoside), and ciprofloxacin (new quinolone) with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We selected these antimicrobial agents because their effectiveness against Leptospira is well known [1,2,5]. In addition to the time-dependent changes, we studied specific responses induced by a particular antimicrobial agent.…”
