In vitrofibroblast and pre-osteoblastic cellular responses on laser surface modified Ti–6Al–4V

Abstract: The success of any implant, dental or orthopaedic, is driven by the interaction of implant material with the surrounding tissue. In this context, the nature of the implant surface plays a direct role in determining the long term stability as physico-chemical properties of the surface affect cellular attachment, expression of proteins, and finally osseointegration. Thus to enhance the degree of integration of the implant into the host tissue, various surface modification techniques are employed. In this work, l… Show more

“…P and Ca were not detected on Ti6Al4V, likely due to a lower oxide hydration after 7 days of immersion, according to XPS results, see Figure 3. This assumption is consistent with studies on the biocompatibility and osteointegration of these materials, where oxide hydration had been reported to favor calcium phosphate precipitation [56,57,59,64]. …”

“…This chemical adsorption modifies the non-ideal capacitance of the titanium oxide becoming more resistive through the immersion. In relation to the R f parameter, values of 10 7 Ω cm 2 are reached for the three samples at different immersion times, with these results being similar to those reported in the literature [56]. …”

“…Karu in 1989 reported that the components of electron transport chain systems in mitochondria including cytochrome c oxidase molecule can be used as the primary light receptors for the absorption of red-NIR light spectrum. [9][10][11] This absorbed energy is transformed into ATP that increases the activity of the mitochondrial proton pump, increasing oxygen consumption and enhancing synthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase (NADH), RNA and protein. [12][13][14] Finally, these changes will lead to increased expression of growth factors and cell proliferation.…”

“…Similarly, the MC3T3‐E1 cells on the pure Ti films multiplied faster and covered more area than the L929 cells. It has been reported that MC3T3‐E1 cells on pure Ti films formed overlapping multilayers after becoming confluent and followed by calcifying (Chikarakara et al, ). This is consistent with our observations of Alizarin red S staining imaged by the SEM.…”
