In Vitro Evaluation of Antimicrobial Peptides from the Black Soldier Fly ( Hermetia Illucens ) against a Selection of Human Pathogens

Abstract: With the ever growing antimicrobial resistance, finding new candidates for antimicrobial drug development is indispensable. Antimicrobial peptides have steadily gained attention as alternatives for conventional antibiotics, due to some highly desirable characteristics, such as their low propensity for resistance development.

“…The hemolysis analysis confirmed the non-toxicity suggested by HemoPred online software [ 153 ]. Similarly, the hemolytic results of cecropins are in close agreement with previous conclusions from this web server [ 154 ]. In silico screening of the properties of peptides from the genome of Lactobacillus casei HZ1, including bioinformatics analysis by HemoPI, allowed the identification of a highly active AMP against S. aureus [ 155 ] and an anticancer sequence [ 156 ], both with low hemolytic effects.…”

“…Moreover, insects can also feed on substances with different levels of contaminations, so they synthesize AMPs to fight such infections and survive in dangerous conditions [ 66 ]. AMPs extracted from insects have the potential to fight the microorganisms that act as hazards to human health [ 66 , 67 ]. One of the most interesting insect species is Diptera Hermetia illucens , which is able to produce a number of AMPs, far superior to that of other insects [ 44 ].…”
