In VitroAntibacterial Activity of Pomegranate Juice and Peel Extracts on Cariogenic Bacteria

Abstract: Aim To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of hydroalcoholic extracts of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel and juice, against the microorganisms considered the main etiologic agents of dental caries. Methods The values of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined against Streptococcus mutans Clarke ATCC® 25175™ strain and Rothia dentocariosa clinical isolate. Results Peel extracts inhibit effectively the growth and survival of S. mutans ATCC… Show more

“…14 It has also been demonstrated to reduce carcinogenic bacterial metabolites responsible for tooth decay by using the peel extract of P. granatum. 18 Our study also supports the earlier findings that P. granatum is very rich in antimicrobial constituents and reiterates further research on the purification and characterization of various compounds in addition to their mode of action.…”

“…Recent study indicates that both pomegranate aril and peel extracts have an effective antimicrobial activity, as evidenced by the inhibitory effect on the bacterial growth of two important human pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, often involved in food borne illness . Later the antimicrobial activity of extracts of pomegranate peel and juice on cariogenic bacteria has been also highlighted by Gianmaria Fabrizio Ferrazzano (Ferrazzano et al, 2017). Moreover MiklavčičVišnjevec et al, (2017) have reported the ethanol and water extracts of pomegranate exocarp and mesocarp showed the greatest antimicrobial activity against many bacterial strains tested.…”

“…Pomegranate peel extracts effectively inhibited the growth and survival of S . mutans ATCC 25175 strain with high MIC and MBC values (10 and 15 mg ml −1 respectively) (Ferrazzano et al ). Thus, the antimicrobial activities of AMP and P. granutum extract against S. mutans might be unimportant.…”

“…Pomegranate extracts exhibit an antimicrobial effect on a wide range of bacteria (Pagliarulo et al ). Moreover studies have demonstrated the antibacterial activity of pomegranate extracts against S. mutans in both planktonic and biofilm forms (Vahid‐Dastjerdi et al ; Ferrazzano et al ).…”
