IL28B polymorphisms predict response to therapy among chronic hepatitis C patients with HCV genotype 4

Abstract: Genetic polymorphisms near IL28B are associated with spontaneous and treatment-induced clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Our objective was to assess the predictive value of IL28B polymorphisms in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C of patients with HCV genotypes 4, for which data are currently limited. We analysed the association of IL28B polymorphisms with the virological response to treatment among 182 naïve chronic hepatitis C patients with HCV genotype 4, all from Syria. Associations of alleles with t… Show more

“…There were 51 studies with a total of 11,102 HCV-4 patients included in the primary analysis (Table 1)[1016, 18, 27, 28, 34, 35, 3742, 45, 46, 48, 53–56, 59, 62, 63, 6567, 69, 7173, 7581, 8385, 88, 90, 91, 93, 95, 96]. The majority of studies (40/51, 78%) originated from the Middle East[1013, 15, 16, 18, 27, 28, 34, 35, 37, 4042, 45, 46, 53–56, 59, 62, 63, 66, 67, 69, 72, 75, 78, 80, 81, 8385, 88, 91, 95] and Europe (9/51, 18%)[14, 38, 39, 65, 71, 76, 79, 93, 96].…”

“…(68% from Egypt) (Ge et al, 2009a), 82 patients from different ethnic groups (51% Egyptians, 34% Europeans and 13.4% SubSaharan Africans) (Asselah et al, 2012), 201 cases from Qatar and 182 from Syria (Antaki et al, 2013), were all analyzed for a single SNP, rs12979860 (except for Antaki et al, who studied rs8099917 and rs12979860). The current study provides the largest study group to date with patients of the same ethnic group with genotype 4 and studies 3 SNPs in correlation with the cytokine IP-10.…”

“…It has previously been clarified that host genetics play an essential role in clearing acute hepatitis C infection and achieving an SVR (32). Variants in the minor alleles, rs8099917 and rs12979860, are associated with SVR and natural viral clearance (33). In the present study of Chinese HCV-infected populations, the rate of T/T in rs8099917 and C/C in rs12979860 was significantly higher compared with the other two allelic genes (P<0.01) and was correlated with HCV genotype variation.…”
