Hoxa2 - and Rhombomere-Dependent Development of the Mouse Facial Somatosensory Map

Abstract: In the mouse trigeminal pathway, sensory inputs from distinct facial structures, such as whiskers or lower jaw and lip, are topographically mapped onto the somatosensory cortex through relay stations in the thalamus and hindbrain. In the developing hindbrain, the mechanisms generating such maps remain elusive. We found that in the principal sensory nucleus, the whisker-related map is contributed by rhombomere 3-derived neurons, whereas the rhombomere 2-derived progeny supply the lower jaw and lip representatio… Show more

“…zMOZ-dependent expression of Hox proteins such as Hoxa2a and Hoxa2b controls segment-specific fate maps of facial skeletal precursors. Related to this, Hoxa2 is important for development of mouse facial somatosensory map (Oury et al, 2006) and Lin49 controls Hox-C expression in C. elegans (Chamberlin and Chang et al, 2003). All of these suggest that zMOZ is important for skeletogenesis in zebrafish.…”

“…Inactivation of Hoxa2 did not affect the breathing frequency, but, instead, led to a largerthan-normal inspiratory amplitude (tidal volume in figure 2b). We analysed the distribution of EGFP þ cells in knock-in mice in which EGFP expression was selectively induced in r2-derived Hoxa2-expressing cells upon Cre-mediated recombination (in collaboration with F. Rijli, see Oury et al 2006). This was done by mating the Hoxa2 EGFP(lox-neo-lox) knock-in allele with an r2-specific Cre transgenic line ).…”
