HOGG1 Ser326Cys polymorphism and modification by environmental factors of stomach cancer risk in Chinese

Abstract: Oxidative stress is involved in many types of DNA damage, e.g., resulting in 8-hydroxyguanine adducts. Since a human counterpart exists for the yeast gene OGG1 (hOGG1) encoding an enzyme that repairs 8-hydroxyguanine, its polymorphism, Ser 326 Cys, might have potential as a genetic marker for cancer susceptibility. To investigate its association with stomach cancer risk and possible interactions with environmental factors, we conducted a case-control study of 101 stomach cancer cases and 198 controls using PCR… Show more

“…Of these studies, three (Poplawski et al, 2006;Arai et al, 2008;Li et al, 2009) were excluded because these studies didn't report available data. As a result, a total of eleven publications Hanaoka et al, 2001;Takezaki et al, 2002;Tsukino et al, 2004;Capella et al, 2008;Farinati et al, 2008;Canbay et al, 2010;Malik et al, 2010;Palli et al, 2010;Sun et al, 2010;Engin et al, 2011) involving 5,107 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. Table 1 lists the main characteristics of these studies.…”

“…[24][25][26][27] In order not to interfere with our analysis of hOGG1 polymorphism on the susceptibility to the pterygium, the subjects suffering from benign or malignant tumours were excluded. On the other hand, owing to the fact that the veterans accounted for approximately 50% of our patients, there were higher proportions of male sex and outdoor occupation type in our patients and controls.…”

“…The hOGG1 Cys/Cys homozygosity has been reported to increase the risks of lung cancer, 24 oesophageal cancer, 25 orolaryngeal cancer, 26 and stomach cancer. 27 Additionally, some studies revealed the impact of this genetic polymorphism on patients suffering from chronic oxidative stress. 28,29 In this study, we tried to investigate whether the hOGG1 genetic polymorphism is associated with the susceptibility of humans to pterygium.…”
