Hibiscus SabdariffaLinnaeus Aqueous Extracts Attenuate the Progression of Renal Injury in 5/6 Nephrectomy Rats

Abstract: Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. (HS) is a tropical wild plant with antioxidant, antibacterial, antihypertensive, and lipid-lowering properties. In several animal models, HS aqueous extracts reduced the severity of the multi-organ injuries such as hypertension and diabetic nephropathy. One of the multiorgan injuries is chronic kidney disease (CKD), which results from the loss of nephron function. HS was used in a 5/6 nephrectomy (5/6 Nx) rat model to determine if it could attenuate the progression of CKD. HS (250 mg/… Show more

“…A tail cuff plethysmography (IITC Life Scientific Instruments, Woodland Hills, CA, USA) was used for the measurement of systolic blood pressure (SBP) as previously described elsewhere [ 25 ]. SBP was measured before the clamping of left renal bundle at wk-1 and then again at 4, 12, and 20 weeks after right nephrectomy.…”

“…The aqueous extract of HS was prepared as described earlier . Fifty and 100 g of HS were placed separately in 950 and 900 ml distilled water, respectively, shaken for 5 min, left overnight at room temperature and filtered to provide the 5 and 10% aqueous extracts.…”

“…Hibiscus sabdariffa extract has been shown previously to be effective in a surgical model of CKD, [20] but the constituents of the extract responsible for this activity were not determined. The most active constituents of HS extracts have been shown on several occasions to be anthocyanins (ref.…”

“…), reactive nitrogen species (tocotrienol [50], etc. ), and lipid peroxidation products (breviscapine [51,52], Flammulina velutipes [53], Hibiscus sabdariffa [54], and many more-see Table 2). Beside decreasing malondialdehyde, Artemisia campestris also lowered the level of nitric oxide (NO) and advanced oxidation protein products [55].…”
