Helicobacter pylori and the intestinal microbiome among healthy school‐age children

Abstract: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the dominant species of the human gastric microbiome. H. pylori can persistently colonize the human stomach. 1 The prevalence of H. pylori amid low-middle income countries is higher than in high-income countries and in low vs. high socioeconomic status (SES) communities. 1,2 H. pylori causes chronic gastritis, usually without symptoms, and among a minority of infected persons, it causes peptic ulcer disease, gastric adenocarcinoma, and mucosa-associated lymphoma. 1,3,4

“…In addition, the microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract can also affect the colonization of H. pylori , and studies have found that Lactobacillus can inhibit the growth of H. pylori strains and can be used in the treatment of H. pylori infections ( Salas-Jara et al, 2016 ; Huang et al, 2022 ). Studies have shown a significant correlation between H. pylori infection and the composition of the gastrointestinal microbiota, particularly Prevotella copri and Eubacterium biforme ( Lapidot et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Recently, H. pylori was reported to be closely associated with abdominal pain in children, and histological examination clearly revealed that H. pylori is located in the gastric mucosa. 29 Helicobacter pylori can transmit from human to human, that is, H. pylori in children might be from their parents. 30 Long-term infection with H. pylori affects the growth and development of children.…”

“…H. pylori infection affects the microbiome of the stomach and gut ( 48 , 49 ). A recent study showed a significant effect of enteric infections on the immune response to OPV in children from India, while the gut microbiome did not have any impact in this population ( 50 ).…”
