The species concept within the genus Picoa Vittad. is here revisited in light of new molecular and ecological data obtained from samples collected throughout the Mediterranean basin. Two highly diverse widespread clades and four additional minor lineages were significantly supported by three genes dataset (ITS, 28s LSU and RPB2) inferences for 70 specimens. The two widespread clades occur in very different geographical and ecological areas associated with exclusive host plants in the genus Helianthemum. SEM study of spore surface morphology in these lineages revealed the existence of smooth ascospores in the majority of these clades. However the most frequent lineage in Europe and coastal North Africa displayed either smooth or verrucose spores. Hence this morphological criterion cannot be reliably used to discriminate between the different clades. In addition, SEM observations made on ascospores from several original collections of P. juniperi and P. lefebvrei supported the hypothesis that ornamentation depends on the degree of maturity in some of these lineages. Geographical and ecological, rather than morphological data are here suggested as the most useful characters to separate the different lineages in Picoa. Further studies focusing on these features are needed before the names P. juniperi and P. lefebvrei can be unambiguously linked with the genetic lineages observed.

Objective: To evaluate the essential oil composition and the antibacterial activity of an\ud Algerian endemic plant, Launaea lanifera Pau (L. lanifera), grown in arid steppe regions.\ud Methods: L. lanifera essential oil was isolated from aerial parts by steam distillation and\ud its chemical composition was evaluated by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector\ud and gas chromatography with electron impact mass spectrometry. Furthermore, its\ud in vitro antibacterial activity against four bacterial strains was tested following the agar\ud disk diffusion method.\ud Results: This species had a very low essential oil yield (0.005%). Twenty-four (92.6%)\ud individual components were identified. The main constituents were hexahydrofarnesyl\ud acetone (31.6%), (E)-b-ionone (8.5%), (E)-b-damascenone (7.0%), 2-methyltetradecane\ud (3.8%), n-heptadecane (3.8%), limonene (2.8%) and b-caryophyllene (2.8%). No noteworthy\ud antimicrobial activity was observed on the tested bacteria, neither Gram negative\ud nor Gram positive.\ud Conclusions: This is the first report on the volatile constituents and antibacterial activity\ud of L. lanifera. The studied essential oil does not possess significant activity against the\ud tested microorganisms

Se aborda el estudio de la familia Cistáceas del Sureste Ibérico, profundizando en aspectos relacionados de su simbiosis micorrícica con hongos hipogeos pertenecientes a los géneros Terfezia, que representa junto a Tirmania la mayoría de las turmas consumidas en el ámbito mediterráneo y de manera secundaria, Picoa y Melanogaster. Se realiza una síntesis de los datos recopilados en la bibliografía especializada, aportando, además, información de campo, alguna de ella inédita, que viene a incrementar y precisar de forma significativa la información disponible hasta la fecha sobre la relación micorrícica. Destacan los resultados sobre el género Helianthemum, que presenta un total de 21 especies, 12 de las cuales tienen constatada la producción de ascocarpos de Terfezia en condiciones naturales.
