The proteins exposed at the surface of intact whole cells of 6 strains of Haemophilus ducreyi were identified by radioactive labelling using 125I and Iodogen, followed by autoradiography of SDS‐polyacrylamide gels of cell lysates. The most highly labelled proteins were a 39‐kDa protein found in all 6 strains, and a group of proteins which exhibited inter‐strain variation ranging between 27 and 30.5 kDa.
