GraphisandAllographa(lichenized Ascomycota:Graphidaceae) in Sri Lanka, with six new species and a biogeographical comparison investigating a potential signature of the ‘biotic ferry’ species interchange

Abstract: We provide an updated survey for Sri Lanka of species of Graphis sensu Staiger, recently divided into Graphis s. str. and Allographa, including brief descriptions and a key to all 124 species currently known. Six new species are described: Allographa bambusicola Weerakoon, Lücking & Aptroot, a bambusicolous Allographa with entire labia, a laterally carbonized excipulum, 80–100 × 15–17 µm large, muriform ascospores and a rather thick, irregularly verrucose lateral thalline margin of the lirellae; A. weeraso… Show more

“…Phylogenetic analysis in 2018 indicates that there are 271 Graphis species in the Graphidaceae core group. However, several Graphis species have been recently discovered in Brazil (Aptroot, Lücking & da Silva Cáceres, 2023;de Oliveira Junior et al, 2020), the Colombian Amazon (Lücking et al, 2023), and Thailand (Motta, Amortegui, Moncada & Lücking, 2019;Weerakoon, Aptroot, Lücking, Arachchige & Wijesundara, 2019).…”

“…The new species were discovered in a range of diverse locations including high altitude tea plantations in Sri Lanka, the Altai Mountains in Russia and various islands such as the Falklands (Malvinas), Galapagos, and Lord Howe (Archer & Elix, 2019; Bungartz & Spielmann, 2019; Fryday, 2019; Weerakoon, Aptroot, Lücking, Arachchige, & Wijesundara, 2019; Yakovchenko, Davydov, Ohmura, & Printzen, 2019; Figure 4c). In two of the most globally threatened tropical biomes—the seasonally dry tropical forests of Mexico and the Atlantic forests in Northeast Brazil—multiple species descriptions were concentrated in the orders Arthoniales and Ostropales (de Lima et al, 2019; de los Ángeles Herrera‐Campos et al., 2019).…”
