Gordona: A Rare Cause of Peritoneal Dialysis Peritonitis

Abstract: PDI species isolated from effluent. Because biochemical identification of Brevibacterium to the species level might be aspecific, we advocate the use of 16S rRNA gene sequencing as a valuable method for accurate species identification. DISCLOSURESThe authors have no actual or potential financial conflicts of interest.

“…Although Gordonia species have been implicated in a variety of infections, only seven cases of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)-related peritonitis caused by Gordonia species have been described (1)(2)(3)(4). Furthermore, the methods used for identifying these seven Gordonia isolates were not mentioned in five cases (2,4), and the accuracy of the identifications could not be ascertained.…”

“…In patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), Gordonia species can rarely cause peritonitis. [1][2][3] Nonetheless, the natural history, optimal treatment, and outcome of Gordonia peritonitis are not well described in the literature. In the past 10 years, we encountered four cases of Gordonia peritonitis in our centre.…”

“…In the past 10 years, we encountered four cases of Gordonia peritonitis in our centre. In addition, we identified only three case reports of Gordonia peritonitis in literature search . Here, we report the four Chinese PD patients with peritonitis caused by Gordonia species in our centre.…”

“…They are followed by Gram-negative organisms and fungi. However, recently there have been increasing reports of rare and unusual organisms causing peritonitis in patients maintained on PD (Imran et al ., 2012; Kahveci et al ., 2011). Strains of Rhizobium spp.…”
