Galerucella placida Baly in Australia (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae)

Abstract: The Asiatic chrysomelid Galerucella placida Baly is identified in Australia for the first time. It is a senior synonym of Adimonia mastersi Blackburn (syn. n.), described from New South Wales, a species that has also been placed in Hoplostines Blackburn, Poneridia Weise and Pyrrhalta Joannis. Galerucella placida feeds on Persicaria Mill. in near‐coastal south‐east Australia. The species is diagnosed and a key is provided for the group of genera to which it belongs in Australia. The genus Atysa Baly is newly re… Show more

“…Another brachelytrous genus, Ellopidia (four species), occurs in southeast Australia including Tasmania, feeding on Asteraceae (Farrow ). The genera Cassena (two or three species), Galerucella (one species) and Hoplosaenidea (one species) are rare examples of widespread Eurasian or southeast Asian genera occurring in Australopapua but with low diversity (Reid , ). In contrast, the genera Atysa , Menippus and Poneridia are most diverse in tropical Australopapua but also occur further west and east (Reid and Nally ; Reid and Beatson ).…”

“…This insect is abundant in Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Sumatra and Java (Kimoto, 1989; Hnatiuk, 1990; Beenen, 1998). Galerucella placida has been recorded to feed on Persicaria hydropiper (synonym Polygonum hydropiper ) in Australia (Reid, 2001), while the insect has been reported to feed on Polygonum perfoliatum L., P. lapathifolium L. and P. hydropiper L. (Polygonaceae) in China (Ding et al ., 2004). In addition, the insect feeds on P. orientale L. in India (Malik et al ., 2018).…”

“…The Australian fauna of Galerucini includes 23 genera and 271 species (Wilcox 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975; Vachon 1977, 1980; Reid 2001), but is relatively poorly described. No key to the known genera has been published and several genera, which have not been formally recorded for the continent, are present in collections.…”
