Fusariumspp.—An Emerging Pathogen in Chronic Diabetic Ulcer: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: The genus Fusarium is ubiquitous in the environment and has been emerging as an opportunistic human pathogen. We report the case of a 65-year-old man with a history of neuroischemic, otherwise unamenable to revascularization, diabetic foot, who was admitted due to an infected deep foot ulcer. “…Amphotericin B, natamycin and newer azoles such as voriconazole are recommended as the most active antifungal agents for Fusarium foot osteomyelitis. Although treatment guidelines do not include this therapy, oral voriconazole is an adequate empirical treatment for Fusarium foot osteomyelitis before required susceptibility tests ( João, et al, 2021 ). Aspergillus conidia is a ubiquitous commensal fungi in the respiratory tract; however, Aspergillus infections in chronic wounds are rare.…”

“…Fusarium-related diseases have a substantial economic impact on a wide range of crops, including fruits, vegetables, cereals, and cellulose production [3,6,7]. In humans, Fusarium oxysporum is an opportunistic pathogen, responsible for conditions such as keratitis, onychomycosis, and invasive infections in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals [4,8,9].…”
