First Prize: Ureteral Segmental Replacement Revisited

Abstract: Seeding of ureteral grafts with autologous bladder cells does not promote success in two largeanimal models using different xenogenic acellular matrices. However, muscle and urothelium regeneration occurs with ureteral acellular matrix in the dog. Urothelium-seeded de-epithelialized Monti bowel segments may be an acceptable substitute for long proximal ureteral segments. Further technical refinements are required to replace the bowel mucosa completely with normal urothelium.

“…Moreover, in case of an ureter replacement with the Optimaix 3D prototype, an additional layer of omentum or peritoneum might be used to prevent leakage. This procedure is already used for clinical applications [20] and might enhance neovascularization of tissue engineered constructs [21,22]. …”

“…Trials to improve functional outcome were attempted by matrix seeding with different types of cells; The results were not promising when using a urothelial seeded acellular matrix in the replacement of a 3‐cm segmental defect 32 . On the contrary, matrices enhancement with BM‐derived mononuclear cells showed neovascularization and angiogenesis 33 …”
