Ficus hispida leaf paste for goatskin preservation: Pollution reduction in tannery wastewater

Abstract: Wet salting preservation is commonly practiced to preserve raw hide/skin which discharges high salinity wastewater during soaking operation of hide/skin processing. The saline wastewater significantly pollutes the environment. In this study, a novel plant-based approach has been made to preserve the goatskin to reduce pollution in tannery wastewater. The Ficus hispida plant leaf paste with a minimal amount of common salt was applied on the flesh side of raw goatskin. Efficacy of the method was evaluated by scru… Show more

“…Swietenia mahogany (seed) extract was applied as a preservative on raw goat skin, and only 3% (by weight of skin) could preserve the skin up to 30 days easily (Razzaq, Chowdhury, and Uddin 2022). Fiscus hispida leaf paste (10%) with 10% common salt preserved the skin and also resulted in a substantial reduction in salinity from the soaking liquor (Hashem, Hasan, et al 2021). Persicaria hydropiper leaf paste-aided skin preservation was attempted.…”
