“…The competitive nature of the plant did not explain the mechanism of its perpetuation and suppression of other plants. This plant was later identified as Euphorbia hypericifolia L, a Euphorbiaceae of the order Mapighiales [33]. Voucher specimens were deposited at the Limbe Botanic Garden Herberium (SCA: 1689).…”

“…Probably the disappearance of these species is linked to the spread of some invasive alien species (Ailanthus altissima, Opuntia ficus-indica, Arundo donax) that in some cases cover large areas (Figure 10), replacing the natural habitats and characteristic species. The invasion of alien species in Isole Ciclopi is a further confirmation of a widespread phenomenon in the coastal areas of Sicily (Sciandrello & al., , 2014(Sciandrello & al., , 2016 and surrounding islets (Minissale & al., 2005;Pretto & al., 2012;Minissale & Sciandrello 2017). Another important cause of the disappearance of some plant species or natural habitat is the excessive spread of Yellow-legged Gulls (Larus michahellis) in the spring and summer colonize the entire island for nesting, thus affecting the delicate ecological balance between plants, animals and soil, for the supply, with their droppings, of significant quantities of nitrates as already noted by Gristina & Marcenò (2008) for a coastal area of north-west Sicily.…”

“…This species is considered invasive (Randall 2002) and has been found outside its native range in Palau (Fosberg & al. 1980), Caroline Islands (Fosberg & Canfield 1980), Fiji Islands (Smith 1991), Hawaii (Stone Charles & al. 1992Wagner & al.…”

Three additional species were recently recorded: E. hyssopifolia L. from Vittoria (Ragusa) and Pantelleria island by Banfi & Galasso (2014), E. serpens Kunth, from the territory of Aci Trezza (Catania) by Ardenghi & Cauzzi (2015) and E. hypericifolia L. from the Taormina territory (Messina) Sciandrello & al. (2016).…”
