Abstract:Eukaryotic cells segregate many membrane-dependent functions into membrane microdomains also known as lipid rafts. These domains are enriched in polyisoprenoid lipids and in scaffolding proteins belonging to the Stomatin, Prohibitin, Flotillin, and HflK/C (SPFH) protein superfamily, which are also found in prokaryotes. Whereas Gram-positive bacteria were also shown to possess functional membrane microdomains (FMMs) structurally and functionally similar to eukaryotic lipid rafts, little is still known about Gra… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
