ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ. Η εκτροφή των στρουθοκαμήλων στη χώρα μας, όπως και στην υπόλοιπη Ευρώπη, αποτελεί νέα και προσοδοφόρα -όπως φαίνεται-μορφή κτηνοτροφικής απα σχόλησης. Στην ανασκόπηση αυτή επιχειρείται η ενημέ ρωση των Ελλήνων κτηνιάτρων για αρκετά νοσήματα που αναμένεται να συναντήσουν κατά την άσκηση πρακτικής στις εκτροφές αυτές. Επίσης γίνεται αναφορά και σε ορι σμένα νοσήματα, που ενώ θεωρούνται εξωτικά είναι επικίν δυνο να εισαχθούν με γεννήτορες στη χώρα μας. Παρατίθε νται λίγα γενικά στοιχεία και στη συνέχεια αναλύονται διά φορα μη τραυματικής αιτιολογίας νοσήματα που παρατη ρούνται στα πτηνά αυτά. Ανασκοπούνται παθολογικές κα ταστάσεις διαφόρων οργανικών συστημάτων (πεπτικού, α ναπνευστικού, νευρικού, μυοσκελετικοΰ, αναπαραγωγικού κ.λπ.), που οφείλονται σε ποικίλα αίτια (βακτηριακά, ιογε-νή, μυκητικά, παρασιτικά, τοξικά, σφάλματα διαχείρισης).

“…17 In birds, E. rhusipathiae infection is most important in turkeys, which seem to be especially susceptible to septicemia. 2,8 Sporadic cases of erysipelas have also been described in other avian species such as caged laying chickens, 11 ducks, 5 chukars (Alectoris chukar), 3 quails, 13 farmed emus, 6 ring-necked pheasants, 7 a free-ranging Hawaiian crow (Corvus hawaiiensis), 18 and in a little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor). 1 A Laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) of unknown age was presented to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Iowa State University, with a history of death after a 2-week period of weakness and weight loss.…”

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (E. rhusiopathiae) septicemia was demonstrated in a captive Laughing kookaburra ( Dacelo novaeguineae). The bird died after a 2-week period of weakness and weight loss. At necropsy, the bird was emaciated and had reddened and wet lungs. Microscopic lesions were limited to hepatic and pulmonary congestion with focal thrombosis. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was isolated by routine bacterial culture from several organs. Further characterization of the isolate by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis indicated that the isolate has a new genotype pattern 3A(III), which is 91.7% homologous to an E. rhusiopathiae that was isolated from a pig in 2001 and 88% homologous to an isolate recovered in 2000 from a turkey with septicemia. This is the first report of E. rhusiopathiae–induced septicemia in a kookaburra.

Although it has been suggested that effective immunisation of mice is not necessarily adequate demonstration of the ability of a bacterin or vaccine to protect turkeys, 6 obligations exist to use mice as part of the regulatory test requirements for erysipelas vaccines in most countries, including Australia.…”

Erysipelas was characterised by sudden death in yearling emus. Deaths mainly occurred during the cold wet months. Mortalities of 6 to 10% were seen within the first 7 to 10 days of an outbreak. Clinical signs were uncommon but some birds exhibited lethargy and greenish diarrhoea. Necropsy findings included marked petechial haemorrhages on the serosal surface of the large intestine in particular, pericardial effusion and congestion and mottling of the liver. Treatment consisted of individual or mass medication with procaine penicillin, reduction of stress factors such as overcrowding, and spelling and rotation of paddocks. Isolates from two field outbreaks were identified as strain 21. Complete protection was provided by a commercial strain 2b vaccine against challenge by strain 21 field isolates in mice. Annual vaccination of birds at 4 weeks and again at 8 weeks of age appeared to control further outbreaks on farms where the disease had previously occurred and vaccination appeared to protect for at least 12 months.
