Enterococcus hiraeinfections in psittacine birds: Epidemiological, pathological and bacteriological observations

Abstract: SUMMARYCases of Enterococcus hirae septicaemia are described in 10 different species of psittacine birds. In most of the cases other disease causes were not detected, and cytological examination confirmed the aetiological role of the bacteria isolated. Despite these findings, attempts to reproduce the disease in young budgerigars failed. The bacterium was isolated frequently from the faeces of healthy psittacine birds belonging to a wide range of species, and appeared to be member of the normal intestinal flor… Show more

“…Infections are also associated with septicaemia and haemorrhagic enteritis in psittacines (Rich, 2003), corneal ulcers in captive cranes (Miller et al , 1995) and mass mortality in free‐living flamingos (Kock et al , 1999). Different strains of Streptococcus and Enterococcus species have also been isolated from birds in association with septicemic disease (Devriese et al , 1995, 1992, 1991; Droual et al , 1997; Farrow & Collins, 1985). Staphylococcosis is a relatively common disease of domestic poultry, particularly turkeys, resulting in osteomyelitis, arthritis, tendonitis, and occasionally septicemia (Gross, 1978).…”

“…Common enterococcal infections include those of the urinary tract, bloodstream, endocardium and wounds (Shepard & Gilmore, 2002). Although relatively rare, infections by Enterococcus faecalis (Chadfield et al, 2004), Enterococcus hirae (Chadfield et al, 2005), Enterococcus durans (Abe et al, 2006) and Enterococcus cecorum (Stalker et al, 2010) have been described in poultry, and in other birds such as canaries and psittacines (Devriese et al, 1990(Devriese et al, , 1995.…”
