Endolimax kueneni n.sp., Parasitic in the Intestinal Tract of the Monkey Macacus cynomolgus

Abstract: This amoeba was found in the large intestine of a Macacus cynomolgus, that was killed because it suffered from paralysis of the hind legs and emaciation. The autopsy showed these symptoms to be dependent on a general tuberculosis, in which, besides many other organs, the spinal matter was involved. Microscopic examination of the intestinal contents revealed the presence of motile amoebae and cysts. Except some small tubercular foci in the serosa no pathological lesions could be detected in the intestine. Close… Show more

“…Iodamoeba and Endolimax are also endocommensal or facultative parasitic organisms in the intestinal tract of other vertebrates. Species of Endolimax have been reported for a variety of vertebrate hosts [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Although most of them are considered endocommensals, some of them are pathogenic.…”

“…How this hyper-parasite is distributed from cyst to cyst without affecting the trophic forms of Iodamoeba we do not know. There are two possibilities, viz., (1) in the trophic cytoplasm the body of the hyper-parasite remained undetectable by the techniques employed by us and became apparent only when the physiological state of the host cytoplasm switched over to accumulating glycogen; or ( 2 ) spores of the hyper-parasite had a direct entry into the cyst cytoplasm. However, this point can only be settled by further investigation.…”

“…1961 Attention was niainly focused on cysts of Iodanioeba containing "inclusion" bodies. Brug ( 2) in 1920 was the first to notice dark areas in the cytoplasm of cysts of Zodamoeba bzietschlii (syn. Endoliniax kueneni) from a cynomolgus monkey (Macaca irus).…”
