Eimeria acervulina and E. mivati: oocysts, life-cycle and ability to develop in the chicken embryo

Abstract: SUMMARYThree strains of Eimeria acervulina and 3 strains of E. mivati were compared. E. acervulina was characterized by the ovoidal shape of its oocysts and their rapid sporulation, small first-generation schizonts containing few merozoites, and its inability to complete development in the chorio-allantois of chicken embryos. E. mivati had more rounded oocysts with a Longer sporulation time, larger first-generation schizonts containing twice as many merozoites and it developed readily in the chorio-allantois. … Show more

“…Histograms were based on Sampaio (2002) and they represent the width, length and shape-index values of the oocysts and sporocysts and their respective frequencies. Linear regressions for width on length were done according Norton and Joyner (1981) and Pereira et al (2001).…”

“…oocysts, regressions were performed for each host individually, but the graphics were superimposed for better visualization. The method is in agreement with Norton & Joyner (1981), Sampaio (2002) and Berto et al (2008c,d,e). Graphics with the waste and coefficients of regression lines were obtained through the software Microsoft Excel 2007®.…”
