Drosophila subpulchrella, a new species of the Drosophila suzukii species subgroup from Japan and China (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Abstract: Drosophila (Sophophora) subpulchrella Takamori and Watabe, sp. nov., of the D. suzukii subgroup in the D. melanogaster species group, is described from Japan and southern China, and compared with its sibling species, D. pulchrella Tan et al. distributed in the Yun-Gui Highland, south-western China. The results of cross-experiments show a complete pre-mating isolation between D. subpulchrella and D. pulchrella.

“…Both D. subpulchrella (Takamori et al 2006) and D. biarmipes have been proposed as sister to D. suzukii (van der Linde & Houle 2008; Yang et al 2012). To reexamine these relationships, we used DNA from 13 protein-coding genes (3 mtDNA, 10 nDNA, downloaded from Genbank) for 10 members of the melanogaster species group (Supplementary Material 2).…”

“…subpulchrella Takamori andWatabe, 2006. All three species are characterized by the two black spots on male wings while female possesses a pronounced serrated ovipositor (Takamori et al, 2006). Thus far, D. suzukii is the only species of the D. melanogaster group in Europe characterized by a serrated ovipositor present in females and spotted wings present in males.…”

“…From the applied science perspective, it is critical to know the extent to which other relatives of D. suzukii could behave as pests in a similar manner, in the hope of preventing their spread before they are established. Indeed, popular guides have referred to D. suzukii as 'spotted wing Drosophila' [3,5,13] but this description applies to a number of flies in this species group [14,15] and it is not clear how many of them are potentially harmful to agriculture.…”
