DOLICHURANUS PRIMAEVUS (THERAPSIDA: ANOMODONTIA) FROM THE MIDDLE TRIASSIC OF NAMIBIA AND ITS PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS

Abstract: Dicynodont therapsids were near-ubiquitous components of Permo-Triassic terrestrial faunas, but the morphology of many of the nominal species remains poorly understood. Here we provide a detailed redescription of the cranium of the poorly known Dolichuranus primaevus from the Middle Triassic Omingonde Formation of Namibia, based on both the holotype and previously undescribed referred specimens. We identify a number of autapomorphic characters of D. primaevus and provide a revised taxon diag-

“…The monophyly of Kannemeyeriiformes has been recovered in all subsequent analyses [27], [70]: inclusion of “ Dicynodon ”-grade taxa in phylogenetic analyses demonstrates that these taxa lie outside of Kannemeyeriiformes, rather than representing basal members of the kannemeyeriiform subclades. Here we define Kannemeyeriiformes as Kannemeyeria simocephalus (Weithofer, 1888) [71] and all taxa more closely related to it than to Lystrosaurus murrayi (Huxley, 1859) [72] or Dicynodon lacerticeps Owen, 1845 [73].…”

“…Previous phylogenetic analyses of kannemeyeriiform taxa [26], [68][70] produced conflicting topologies and included only a fraction of kannemeyeriiform diversity. Although the current analysis includes almost all valid kannemeyeriiform taxa, relationships within the clade remain weakly supported, and it is likely that they will continue to change in future studies.…”

“…Angielczyk & Kurkin () were the first to analytically recover a cryptodont clade containing oudenodontids, rhachiocephalids and geikiids to the exclusion of dicynodontoids, and this group has also been recovered by most subsequent analyses (with the exception of the highly aberrant topology of Damiani et al . (), who recovered oudenodontids and geikiids nested deeply within Dicynodontoidea and Rhachiocephalus as the sister‐taxon of Cistecephalus + Myosaurus ). For instance, the primary analysis of Kammerer et al .…”

“…; Angielczyk & Kurkin , b; Damiani et al . ; Fröbisch ; Fröbisch & Reisz ; Angielczyk & Rubidge , ) consistently pulled these groups apart, instead finding Pylaecephalidae (usually called ‘Robertiidae’ in this literature) to be one of the earliest‐diverging clades of dicynodonts. Unexpectedly, Pylaecephalidae jumped back to being the sister‐taxon of Emydopoidea in the later, substantially expanded analysis of Kammerer et al .…”

“…, 2009). The topology for Permian taxa is primarily based on Angielczyk (2007), Fröbisch (2007), and Fröbisch & Reisz (2008), whereas that for the Triassic taxa is modified from several sources (Maisch, 2001; Vega‐Dias, Maisch & Schultz, 2004; Surkov, Kalandadze & Benton, 2005; Ray, 2006; Damiani et al. , 2007; Surkov & Benton, 2008).…”
