Dirofilaria immitisin a child from the Russian Federation

Abstract: An immature female worm, Dirofilaria immitis, was isolated from the scrotum of a 14-month-old child. This is the first identification of human dirofilariosis caused by D. immitis in a relatively Northern region (Moscow) of the Russian Federation. The parasite was diagnosed by means of morphological examination of the worm, confirmed by PCR assay. This case raises questions about the range of the D. immitis distribution among humans in Russia. To better understand the geographical distribution of dirofilarioses… Show more

“…Dirofilaria infection is endemic in Russia. Two species of Dirofilaria ( D. immitis and D. repens ) have been identified in humans [54, 63]. Prior to 2014, D. repens infection was detected in 850 people living permanently in 42 regions of the Russian Federation [54].…”

“…Prior to 2014, D. repens infection was detected in 850 people living permanently in 42 regions of the Russian Federation [54]. The first case of D. immitis was detected in 2015 in the Moscow region; an immature female was removed from a 14-month-old child [63]. The dirofilariasis zone in the north of the European part of Russia has advanced to 58° N [4, 10].…”

“…В подавляющем большинстве случаев этиологическим фактором дирофиляриоза человека служит D. repens, инвазия человека D. immitis фиксируется крайне редко. Например, в 2016 г. описан случай обнаружения неполовозрелой самки дирофилярии у ребенка 14 мес в Московской области, не выезжавшего за пределы места жительства [20]. При морфологическом исследовании паразит идентифицирован как D. immitis.…”

“…These two species are able to cause both pulmonary and extrapulmonary infection. It most commonly occurs in adults between the ages of 21 and 60 years (ESDA), but the case of a 14-month-old child with Dirofilaria in the scrotum region has also been described, which is its most common localization in children [6]. Women are more likely to be infected than men, but without a significant statistical difference.…”

“…In many cases, causative therapy is not necessary before the surgery. Tumolskaya et al [6] suggest that the patient should be given a single dose of ivermectin with three doses of diethylcarbamazine if there is a marked suspicion of dirofilariasis.…”
