Dilopolipus, Panesthipolipus, Peripolipusand Stenopolipus, new genera of Podapolipidae (Acarina) from the Indo-Australian Region

Abstract: Four new genera of Podapolipidae (Acarina) are described. They are all parasites of beetles and cockroaches in Southeast Asia and the East Indies: Panesthipolipus from Panesthia angustipennis (Blaberidae), Peripolipus from Periplaneta spp. (Blattidae), Dilopolipus from Dilochrosis sp. (Scarabaeidae) and Stenopolipus from Catharsius sp. (Scarabaeidae). Keys to the 19 genera of Podapolipidae are presented. Distribution of the following species are reported from the Indo-Australian Region: Archipolipus canthoni, … Show more

“…The host spectrum might be limited to species in the same subfamily or genus. Husband (1984) stated that some Coccipolipus species might be specific within a host clade. For example, Coccipolipus chilocori Husband has been recorded from five central African Chilocorus ladybird beetles, but not other sympatric coccinellids.…”

“…A revised description of Tarsopolipus is necessary to include data from Tarsopolipus africanus Husband, 1986 and 3 new species in this paper, to account for transfer of Tarsopolipus langi Husband, 1978 from Stenopolipus (Husband, 1984) and to reflect new concepts developed in the revision of the Tarsonemoidea (Lindquist,1986).…”

“…The genus Podapolipus presently comprises approximately 20-25 species of mites parasitic on the orders Dictyoptera, Orthoptera and Coleoptera (Fcldman-Muhsam and Havivi, 1972, Naudo 1967and Husband, 1986. The world distribution of Podapolipidae was discussed by Husband (1984). The Podapolipus species viz., P. ichthyus, P. pseudoichthyus, P. pteronicheus (Mohanasundaram, 1993) and P. nitidulae (Ramaraju and Mohanasundaram, 1996) presently known from India, were described only from grasshoppers.…”
