Different faces but the same meaning: creative ritual practices during the COVID-19 pandemic

The importance of spiritual nourishment has become the hope of the people in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This spiritual side of the people must be in tandem with the social responsibility for those in need. Dealing with both spiritual and social responsibilities points out the ‘Alay Kapwa Spirituality’. Thus, in both spiritual and social aspects, this paper highlights that practicing ‘Alay Kapwa Spirituality’ in the time of the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic is highly useful response in satisfying one’s spiritual thirst and social responsibility.

The coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic has brought not only disaster to humanity but also the best in each human individual. Filipinos, in a special way, have exhibited the inherent greatness of the human person in the construction of the community pantries where people who can sustain their needs in time of pandemic would donate some provisions to those who are needy. The establishment of various community pantries across the Philippines embodies the spirituality of ‘Alay Kapwa’, a spirituality that connects people together especially in time of crisis to be persons for others rather than harboring an unnaturalistic human and primitive attitude of self-centeredness.

The well-being and the will of the Filipino people are now to be considered. With many people gathering and having leisure time, the well-being of the people is being balanced now. The spiritual, mental and social well-being of the people are being satisfied but with the consequence of putting our safety at stake because of the seemingly unending threat of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. We know that we want a normal life, but it seems too much for the people to stay at home while seeing other countries enjoy a post-pandemic life.
