Demos-Ethos: a framework to study the Icelandic and Basque cases through Critical Social Innovation and Applied Ethics

Abstract: This paper presents a framework informed by two disciplines, Social Innovation and Applied Ethics, to be used in an on-going analysis of territorial democratic systems. The time frame chosen for the case studies is the period before and after the 2008 global crisis. In Iceland the crisis had an economic and political aspect affecting the self-understanding of the territory as a whole. In the Basque Country it also deals with the current peace process to settle down political violence and its causes. In both ca… Show more

“…The synthetic analytical table below provides comparatively brief, evidence-based qualitative data about the two events. Although the aim of this paper is not a deep analysis, further complementary reading can be found by Casado and Calzada (2015). In the appendix, two main authors' contributions (Bernburg 2016;Monterde et al 2015) have been presented by conducting content analysis on the keyword "social media".…”

“…Millennials participated, civil society mobilised, a change of government was provoked, and democratic regeneration benefited from the smallness of the social systemic changes. It goes without saying that this specific event modified Iceland's DNA and existing social values, having direct consequences on reinforcing the "education for citizenship" in the whole country (Bani 2012;Casado and Calzada 2015). Nevertheless, even though a new democratic government was able to rescue the country from a major economic disaster in a short span of time, there is no definitive evidence that "the reexamination process that was opened in 2008 has yet been resolved" (Casado and Calzada 2015: 1).…”

“…A.K.Verbos et al put forward the view that "an ethical identity exists in an organization, and how genuine leadership, coherent processes, and ethical culture interact to promote this" [15] (p. 28). A. C. da Rocha and I. Calzada defined and substantiated the leading research tool ("Demos-Ethos Framework") as a blueprint that can be adapted to similar conditions [16]. A. C. da Rocha and I. Calzada developed an ethical approach by creating a framework for defining the ethical aspects of social innovation and testing it in a specific context, such as the crisis experienced in the past few years in Iceland.…”
