Dasineura banksiae: a new species of gall midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) feeding on Banksia coccinea (Proteaceae) in Australia

Abstract: Banksia coccinea is a shrub with large red flower heads, grown commercially as a cut flower plant in Western Australia and South Australia. Dasineura banksiae Kolesik, a gall midge species new to science and formally described here, was found inducing galls on leaves of B. coccinea in natural populations and in commercial plantations in Western Australia. White, globular, hairy galls occur on the leaf underside, each containing larvae of D. banksiae. The presence of galls decreases commercial value of the infe… Show more

“…Currently, 15 described Dasineura species are known from various plant families in Australia (Gagné 2010;Kolesik et al 2007), 11 of which develop in reproductive organs of Acacia (Kolesik et al 2005) and two of them were recently introduced into South Africa as biological control agents against Acacia cyclops (Adair 2005) and A. mearnsii (Impson et al 2008).…”

“…The others are Resseliella proteae Gagné, a non-galling species feeding within flower heads of Protea repens (L.) L. in South Africa (Gagné 1983) and Dasineura banksiae Kolesik that causes conspicuous spherical white-haired leaf galls on Banksia coccinea R. Br. in Western Australia (Kolesik et al 2007).…”
