Cryptococcus arboriformis Sp. Nov., a Novel Anamorphic Basidiomycetous Yeast Species Isolated from a Patient's Urine

Abstract: A basidiomycetous yeast strain isolated from the urine of a 73‐year‐old Japanese patient with chronic renal failure was revealed to be a novel species by sequencing the D1/D2 26S rDNA and ITS regions of the rRNA gene. The name Cryptococcus arboriformis sp. nov. is proposed for the isolate, with IFM 54862T (=CBS 10441T =JCM 14201T) as the type strain. A phylogenetic analysis positioned Cryptococcus arboriformis in the Trichosporonales lineage and showed that it is closely related to C. haglerorum.

“…In 2007, this species was accurately identified using D1/D2 26S ribosomal DNA gene sequencing of a urine sample obtained from a patient with chronic renal failure. However, the pathogenicity remains unclear, and only one infection caused by this species has been reported to date (1,2). In this article, we present a rare case report of central line-associated bloodstream infection caused by C. arboriformis with successful treatment of the infection.…”

“…These rare Cryptococcus spp. were mostly isolated from cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) [4,[21][22][23][24][26][27][28][29][30], blood and skin lesions [2,25,[31][32][33][34][35], peritoneal fluid [15,36], but also from vagina [2,3,35,37], nails [16,35,38,39], bone marrow [20], urine [19,40], nasal cavities [41], or oral cavity [42].…”

“…Cryptococcus arboriformis , a basidiomycetous yeast species, was recently isolated from the urine of a Japanese patient with chronic renal failure [10]. It is closely related to Cryptococcus haglerorum and is classified under the Trichosporonales lineage [10].…”

“…It is closely related to Cryptococcus haglerorum and is classified under the Trichosporonales lineage [10]. We were not able to identify our isolate using conventional yeast identification tests because this newly identified species are not yet in the NCBI database (a genome database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information).…”
