“…Four sets of data were used to test the robustness of the model. The first is a rainfall gradient in south-western Western Australia , the second is an altitude gradient in southern Tasmania (Turnbull et al, 1993), the third is a set of sites from northern Tasmania that covers a wide range of fertility and soil conditions (Osler et al, 1996) and the final is a spacing trial near Manjimup, Western Australia (Henskens Biomass allocation protocol followed in CABALA. P N is net primary production, Z F and Z FR are allocation of P N to foliage and fine roots, respectively, N is nitrogen, N F is foliar nitrogen concentration, W F and W fR are the standing biomass of foliage and fine roots respectively.…”

“…globulus and E. nitens have been selected almost exclusively for fibre plantations in Tasmania as they have superior early growth rates compared to other species (Turnbull et al 1993). The comparative response of these species to the imposition of drought has not been tested.…”

“…Major provenance testing and breeding programs to support plantation forestry for these species were commenced by CSIRO (Griffin et al 1982). This genetic research, along with silvicultural research and operational plantation programs, was abandoned in the 1990s when it became clear that E. nitens (and E. globulus in low-elevation, less frost-prone areas), were much more reliable in terms of successful plantation establishment and rapid early growth (Turnbull et al 1993). Recent re-examination of some of the original species trials and pilot plantings in the Esperance Valley in southern Tasmania indicates that more than 25 years after planting, E. delegatensis and E. regnans are performing on a par with E. nitens and E. globulus, in contrast to the clear superiority of the latter two species at age 5 years.…”
