CLOSTRIDIUM INNOCUUM , SP. N., A SPORE-FORMING ANAEROBE ISOLATED FROM HUMAN INFECTIONS

Abstract: NOTES magnitude of about one-tenth. The other genera are generally less active, with some of the leuconostocs and the lactobacilli displaying only feeble, though readily demonstrable, catalase activity. There is some evidence for slight azide inhibition in preparations of cells grown in the absence of azide. This phenomenon is reminiscent of the findings of Whittenbury (Nature 187:433, 1960), who observed the formation of a catalase in certain heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria, apparently through the cou… Show more

“…Several of the erysipelotrichia have been shown to form endospores (Holdeman et al , 1971; Kaneuchi et al , 1979; E. Allen-Vercoe, personal communication; Smith & King, 1962). Although these genomes carry many of the genes previously characterized as being essential for sporulation, such as the genes for dipicolinate synthase ( spoVF operon) (Traag et al , 2010), we were unable to find genes that are homologous to those of the Bacillus subtilis spoIIIA operon in any of these genomes.…”

“…The first human case of C. innocuum infection was reported in the 1960s (Smith and King 1962 ). The term “innocuum” is derived from “innocuous” (i.e., meaning innocent) as the organism lacks the ability to produce toxins.…”

“…The term “innocuum” is derived from “innocuous” (i.e., meaning innocent) as the organism lacks the ability to produce toxins. A PubMed search of the literature identified 16 previously reported cases of C. innocuum infection (Smith and King 1962 ; Castiglioni et al 2003 ; Crum-Cianflone 2009 ; Hung et al 2014 ; Bodey et al 1991 ; Cutrona et al 1995 ). Details of these cases are summarized in Additional file 1 : Table S1.…”

“…We report the complete genome sequence of Clostridium innocuum strain ATCC 14501, which was identified in 1962 after isolation from an appendiceal abscess ( 1 ). It was characterized as a Gram-positive rod with terminal spores.…”
