Citrobacter freundii, a natural associate of the Colorado potato beetle, increases larval susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis

Abstract: BACKGROUND We assume that certain representatives of gut microflora mediate immune changes during dysbiosis, accelerating septicemia caused by Bacillus thuringiensis. RESULTS Co‐introduction of Citrobacter freundii with Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis (morrisoni) (Bt) led to an increase in Colorado potato beetle (CPB) larval mortality to 69.0% (1.3–5×) and a synergistic effect was observed from day 1 to day 6. Ultrathin sections of the CPB midgut showed autophagosome formation and partial destruction o… Show more

“…The outermost layer of the enterocytes of most insects is also covered with a layer of tightly arranged microvilli, mainly composed of actin [ 83 ]. When Serratia marcescens and Bacillus thuringiensis invade the intestines of B. dorsalis and Leptinotarsa decemlineata , respectively, the microvilli are abnormally shed as the infection progresses [ 9 , 84 ]. Meanwhile, the genes Big Bang and myosin IB ( Myo1B ) encode septal junction strength and microvilli structures [ 44 , 85 ].…”

“…Currently, the response mechanisms and immune resistance of insects is attracting worldwide attention to improve the insecticidal activity of Bt and managing insect resistance to Bt . In fact, understanding the host response mechanisms and immune resistance to Bt and Bt proteins will enable us to identify more ways of pest control and resistance management [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ]. In this review, we will focus on the involvement of enhanced immune defense of insects against Bt , including the pattern recognition proteins for recognizing Bt , AMPs and their synthetic signaling pathways, the prophenoloxidase system, ROS generation, nodulation, encapsulation, phagocytosis, and cell-free aggregates.…”

“…Indeed, the study of microbiota could open new perspectives in medfly control to integrate other control methods. In fact, in several entomological systems (both insect pests and insect vectors), the use of symbiotic microbes to control harmful insects is already common practice in some cases; in others, it may become so in the near future [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]. A striking case in this context is represented by mosquitos’ vectors of pathogens that are dangerous for humans and animals.…”
