Chryseobacterium indologenespneumonia in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Abstract: SUMMARYA 42-year-old man diagnosed with gastric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma 2 years earlier, for which he had undergone treatment, presented with expectorative cough, exertional shortness of breath and left-sided chest pain of 3 months duration. Respiratory system examination was suggestive of left-sided pneumonia with pleural effusion. Routine haemogram showed leukocytosis with high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Chest radiograph showed blunting of left-sided cardiophrenic angle. Sputum culture grew Chryseobacter… Show more

“…Since the firstly reported infection in 1993 of ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by C. indologenes, an increasing number of infections have been described in recent years [2,3]. Among these cases, pneumonia, bacteremia, endocarditis, ocular infections, cellulitis, pleural, and peritoneal infections have been recognized [6,7,[9][10][11][12][13]. Infections of the urinary tract, biliary tract, lumboperitoneal shunt, burn wound, and surgical site have been also reported [7,14].…”

“…There are a total of 251 articles on C. indologenes in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database when the widest possible search criteria are used, including articles on bacterial resistance [6] , [7] , pneumonia [8] , [9] , paediatric infections [10] , [11] and CF [4] , [7] . The same occurs in the case of E. meningoseptica, for which the same database lists 1436 published articles concerning contamination of hospital water [12] , [13] , bacteraemia [14] , [15] , [16] and CF [4] , [17] .…”
