Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection in migrant female sex workers in Italy

Abstract: We have assessed prevalence, incidence, and factors associated with increased risk for Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection among female migrant sex workers in Italy. In a prospective, observational study, women were offered free screening for sexually transmitted diseases and C. trachomatis was tested by a commercial ligase chain reaction assay in endocervical specimens. Of the 101 women tested, 14 (14%) were positive. The odds ratio (OR) for C. trachomatis infection was significantly higher for females un… Show more

“…Such differences persisted even after controlling for possible confounders. The findings differ from studies in other countries that suggested higher rates of sexual risks and STDs among immigrant FSWs than local FSWs (Baustista et al, 2007;del Amo et al, 2005;Matteelli et al, 2003;Pell et al, 2006). The findings also differ from previous studies among general rural-to-urban migrants in China, which suggested higher sexual risks among rural-to-urban migrants than non-migrants (Li et al, 2004;Liu et al, 2005;Yang et al, 2005b).…”

“…For instance, studies conducted in Australia, Europe and South America found that migrant FSWs had high rates of HIV risks, including alcohol use, poor awareness of HIV transmission, low rates of condom use and high rates of STDs (Bautista et al, 2008;del Amo et al, 2005;Matteelli et al, 2003;Pell, Dabbhadatta, Harcourt, Tribe, & O'Connor, 2006). However, most of the existing studies regarding migrant FSWs have been conducted among immigrant FSWs, i.e.…”

“…Evidence has shown that women in sex work may face abuse and exploitation,11 12 and studies of migrant sex workers suggest this may be exacerbated by insecure immigration status,13 ethnic discrimination,14 ghettoised work conditions,15 reduced access to medical and legal assistance10 16 and higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) 5. Research also suggests that migrants are more vulnerable to mental health problems1 and this may be particularly acute among female sex workers (FSWs) 17.…”

“…This also corroborates the results obtained from local studies conducted on clients of FSW Lau, Tsui, & Ho, 2005), showing similar differentials by locales. As migrant sex workers and commercial sex activities among travelers have been common (Hawkes et al, 1994;Matteelli et al, 2003;van Haastrecht et al, 1993), the observed geographic differentials in condom use among FSW and/or their clients may also occur in other places. To our knowledge, this is the first study of this type.…”
