Chilo aleniellus(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a stem borer of maize in Côte d'Ivoire

Abstract: The stem borer, Chilo aleniellus (Strand) (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) is recorded for the first time as a pest of maize in the western part of the forest area of Cote d'lvoire. Descriptions are given of the larva (including chaetotaxy), the pupa, and adult genitalia. The geographical distribution of this species is presented, and its importance as a pest in Cote d'lvoire is discussed.

“…C. orichalcociliellus, a pest of maize and sorghum, occurs in coastal East Africa, Malawi, and Madagascar at altitudes below 600 m (51, 108,127). C. aleniellus has been reported as a pest of rice in West and Central Africa and more recently as an important pest of maize in Ivory Coast (120). C. ignefusalis is the dominant stem borer of millet in the Sahelian zone of West Africa (69).…”

“…Chaetotaxy studies of Chilo aleniellus were carried out by Moyal & Tran (1992). They assumed, based on the drawings of C. orichalcociliellus made by Delobel (1975) and Mathez (1972), that the two species could be separated by counting the microscopical setae on the mesothorax, third and seventh abdominal segments and the head.…”

“…CROP LOSSES OF MAIZE, Zea mays (L.), in Côte d'Ivoire are mainly caused by borers and by maize streak virus (Moyal 1988a). Seven species of borers, all Lepidoptera, are known to attack maize (Moyal and Tran 1992). Two of them, mainly stem borers, are dominant: Eldana saccharina Walker (Pyralidae), which generally begins attack from 50-60 d after emergence; and Busseolu fuscu (Fuller) (Noctuidae), a species that lays its eggs on maize between 20 and 40 d after emergence.…”
