Castroia kamariae sp. nov. and Limatulum kuziai sp. nov. (Lecithodendriidae) from the free-tailed bat (Tadarida mops de Blainville) from West Malaysia

Abstract

Thirteen bats, Tadarida mops de Blainville, collected from the Arnpang district in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, were found positive for the trematodes Castroia kamariae sp. nov. and Limatulum kuziai sp. nov. Two distinct but morphologically similar forms of Castroia kamariae were recovered. The morphological type is apparently determined by its location in the host intestine.Thirteen bats, Tadarida mops de Blainville (Chiroptera: Molossidae), were collected from a tunnel under the reservoir in the Ampang district, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Bats were examined for parasites at the Institute for Medical Research. All trematodes were fixed in AFA, stained in Mayer's paracarmine and counterstained with fast green, dehydrated in ethanol, cleared with methyl salicylate and mounted in Permount. Drawings were made with the aid of a microprojector and photographs. Sucker ratio was determined by dividing the acetabulum width by oral sucker width. All measurements are in micrometres and are given as mean followed by range and length followed by width. Castroia kamariae sp. nov. Material: Based on 20 of 178 adult specimens. Host: Tadarida mops de Blainville. Habitat: Small intestine. Locality: Ampang district of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Diagnosis: Lecithodendriidae: Castroiinae; Castroia. Body wider than long, flattened, reniform 541 (394-679) by 657 (464-907). Tegument aspinose. Oral sucker terminal to subterminal 107 (67-146) by 117 (87-182). Prepharynx short, barely visible 4 (2-7) long. Pharynx 40 (29 -59) by 45 (35 -55). Oesophagus, variable in length, 18 (9 -34) by 8 (4-9). Caeca, forking laterally to posterolaterally, anterior to testes. Acetabulum round 88 (70 -114) by 92 (67 -146), lying within the acetabulo-genital sac 114 (64 -169) by 155 (93-228). Sucker ratio 1:0.80 (1:0.63-0.87).Genital pore mesial to lateromesial, preacetabular, opening into the acetabulo-genital sac. Testes ovoid to round; right testis 105 (58-173) by 166 (122-228), left testis 113 (75-146) by 160 (116-219). Seminal vesicle coiled or curved, mesial to testes, anteriomesial to acetabulum, connecting to prostatic vesicle. Ovary with 5 -7 lobes, 105 (67-151) by 131 (75-228), located anteriomesially to acetabulum to mesially between acetabulum and right testes. Oviduct short, from posterior ovarian lobe connecting to ootype and surrounded by well developed Mehlis' gland. Seminal receptacle originating at ootype. Laurer's canal originating at seminal receptacle and opening dorsally at level of ootype.
